Unreliable product with terrible customer support

Review by ETS, 2010-07-27

Although this opener works well mechanically, the circuit board controlling its operation is unreliable and deteriorates over time. (See other customer reviews who have had the same experience.) After only 2.5 years of operation, we can no longer use the opener because of repeated controller failures, including violent bursts of motor activity slamming the door shut. The product is still under warranty, but the customer support is worthless.

A simply outstanding garage door opener!

Review by D. Whitney, 2010-06-13

This is simply one of the most impressively packaged products for the medium "do it yourselfer" I have come across. While I'm not sure I would suggest you install this or any other garage door opener *by* yourself, it surely is a do-it-yourself project provided you have some extra hands to help you through some critical lifting phases of the installation.

This opener features two key departures from traditional openers: first, a virtually inaudible DC-powered motor that drives a long threaded shaft (screw) that guides a threaded carriage mechanism along the opener's guide rail, thus controlling the direction of the door by controlling the rotation of the shaft. This is in contrast to a band or chain driven by an AC-powered motor. Up and down-limit positions are set by a simple yet elegant magnetic stop that can be easily adjusted as needed merely by loosening a small set screw and sliding the stop to whatever position is needed.

I purchased my version of this opener through Home Depot, whose model also included a wireless entry keypad for the same price.

Clearly, the folks at Genie intended for this opener to be assembled by a DIY-type; phenomenally detailed instructions accompany a larger "blow-up" colored diagram of the installation steps. Parts are organized by colored bags that correspond to the main installation steps, with each bag containing an inventory of its contents. The directions couldn't be simpler - each step starts with "Open the xxx-colored bag and use these parts.." The directions, while excellent, aren't flawless; its very valuable time spent to read through them once and catch a few subtle oversights that might cause you to retrace a few assembly steps. Most of the flaws are omissions rather than actual errors.

My only complaint with this unit is the terminal block that receives the wiring from the obstruction sensors and wall switch. Six screw terminals are mounted too closely together to receive all the wires easily, and was clearly the only snag in my installation effort. A suggestion that this block be replaced with spring terminals would be greatly appreciated!

My installation was a bit non-standard in that it replaced a frustrating old Craftsman unit that was only four years old, but had turned cranky beyond my desire to repair. The benefit of that prior install included wires for the wall unit and wall sensors, along with L-brackets mounted to ceiling studs. I was able to re-use all these existing components in the installation.

If you do opt for a self-install, have a good cordless drill with a variety of bits and nut driver attachments, tape measure, a good step ladder, a phillips-head screwdriver, and a flashlight. Although the supplied wires do not need stripping, a pair of wire strippers could come in handy should you need to cut wire to measure. Time to install is hard to guess, because no two garages are identical - but I'd allocate a good four-hour block, staring in the morning when your rested and fresh, as a minimum. I started in the afternoon of a balmy, humid day in an only somewhat breezy garage, so lots of breaks were had, slowing us down. Also, if you need to mount angle brackets to studs, it might slow you down - but a firm install is *vital* to proper operation. Again, while this *is* a "do-it-yourself" project, it really is *not* a "do-it-*by*-yourself" project. It would be very hard to complete this project without a willing helper - like my son - (or a second tall ladder!) to assist in the mounting phase of the project, where the opener rail has been hung on the bracket over the door, and the power unit must be lifted into its ceiling-mount position.

Lastly, the unit comes well-protected against errant installs. A self-diagnostic light comes on with each power-up, and blinks if it fails a self-test; the "blink count" can be translated to a simple troubleshooting table in the manual, which was an invaluable aid in diagnosing my one wiring error. With that error resolved, all that remained was to set the up and down force - two (very) small dial controls underneath the upper rim in the rear interior of the unit. The default settings are purposely designed to use only minimal force for safety. Once these settings were adjusted appropriately for my door, the unit auto-sensed the proper lift and close speed, and the install required only two 60W light bulbs and the snap-in lens cover to become complete.

In all, any handy do-it-yourselfer in need of a dandy new garage door opener would do well to consider this Genie Screwdrive unit! Installing it myself saved $109 and a multi-day wait from the local contractor.

Highly, highly recommended. Hope my experience helps you!

Great Customer Service! Sent replacement part at no charge!

Review by J. Solomonson, 2010-06-06

I purchased the Genie Excelerator 7 years ago and it has worked flawlessly.

However it recently started to chatter a bit while opening. I called customer service and they were extremely helpful and though the unit was out of warranty, they shipped out a brand NEW carriage carrier the next day AT NO CHARGE! As it turned out, the carriage was not defective, the chattering was caused by loose bolts which caused the opener to stop.

This is by far the best garage door opener on the market. I have installed them in two of my previous homes.

deceptive warranty description. poor customer service

Review by R. Harte, 2010-01-30

Like several other posts i have read, at only four years old, some internal circuit boards shorted out. i was lead to believe by the retailer and the paperwork with the unit, as well as the box it came in, that it was covered by a lifetime warranty on parts and labor. what it said exactly, is "lifetime on Parts and "in home warranty" my interpretation of that is labor is included in the warranty. but when mine broke down, and i called Genie for help, the lady told me that i only had a Parts warranty and that "in home warranty" that they wrote prominently on the box meant that the consumer does the repairs himself in home. To me, this tricky wording is blatantly misleading to make people think it has a better warranty than they are actually offering. With several strings attached, they finally offered to send me replacement circuit boards and that was only if i could fax them all sorts of documentation that i was the original owner and so on. and then if they sent the parts, i'd have to pay the postage. On top of that, since they didn't know for sure what the problem was since they wouldn't send a technician, they were going to send me the parts they were "guessing" was the cause of the breakdown. since having a tech come to the house was going to cost $80, just to start, and that was not including the repairs or if they had all the needed parts, etc, it became obvious it would likely turn out that the cost of getting this one repaired probably would be as much or more than to just replace it. I feel that is what Genie is hoping. Like one or two of the other posters here, i felt they were trying any angle they could to deny covering this defective unit by making it as difficult and cumbersome as possible to get warranty coverage. On top of all of the above, a local authorized service center told me that they also were fed up with Genie and that they give them hard time as well and they recommended i simply buy a Chamberlain and not bother with fixing the Genie as the company will be as evasive as they possibly can to avoid honoring the warranty.

Still working since Jan 2007

Review by D. Bui, 2009-12-29

I purchased this at the local Home Depot and intalled it myself on a 15X7 roll up, insulated two-layer steel garage door.

It takes approximately 6 seconds to roll up and 13 seconds to roll down. At the last 6-8 inches it does gently lower the down - no slamming the door open or shut. The noise level is average and tolerable - not too loud and grinding and not super quiet.

I like the Genie brand because I can program my sister's and parents' garage doors into my 3-button garage door opener. It makes it easy when I visit their homes (which I do often) and need to access the garage.
